Mathurin Guillet
(1649 - 1720)
He was born in Trois Rivières on November 7th 1649, the son of Pierre Guillet dit Lajeunesse and Jeanne Saint Père.  Mathurin spent his early life in Cap de la Madeleine and Batiscan, both settlements relatively close to Trois Rivières.  His father is listed as an original pioneer of these three communities.  On November 11th 1681 in Sainte Anne de la Pérade,  Mathurin Guillet married Charlotte Lemoyne, the daughter of Jean and Marie-Madeleine de Chavigny.  Jean Lemoine was the seigneur of Sainte Marie, a small seigneury located between those of Batiscan and Sainte Anne de la Pérade.

Mathurin and Marie-Charlotte had the following children:

i.Marie-Elisabeth b. September 03, 1684, Ste-Anne-de-la-Pérade, Quebec; d. October 23,
1739, Montreal, Quebec.
Marie-Elisabeth was the 5th mother superior of the Congrégation de Notre Dame founded
by Marguerite Bourgeoys.

ii.Marguerite-Catherine b. October 10, 1688, Montreal, Quebec; d. December 04, 1688,
Montreal, Quebec.

iii.Paul-Alexandre b. January 28, 1689/90, Montreal, Quebec; d. June 07, 1753, Montreal,
Quebec; m. Catherine Pinguet, January 31, 1716/17, Quebec City, Quebec.
Paul Guillet was an important Montreal merchant.  The magazine "Cap-aux-Diamants"
published in 1992 a commemmorative issue to celebrate Montreal's 350th anniversary.
One of the featured articles was on this son of Mathurin Guillet.

iv.Louise-Charlotte b. December 11, 1691, Montreal, Quebec; m. Jean-Baptiste
Cuillerier, February 02, 1717/18, Ste Anne de Bellevue, Quebec; b. March 15, 1685/86,
Lachine, Quebec.
Jean-Baptiste was the son of René Cuillerier who is considered the first citizen of
Lachine.  He was an important merchant of the area. His fortified home came to be known
as Fort Cuillerier.

v.René-Augustin b. December 11, 1691, Montreal, Quebec.

vi.Marie-Angélique b. March 08, 1692/93, Ste Anne de Montreal, Quebec; m. Jacques
Lemoine dit Montigny, January 8, 1716.  Jacques was the son of  Jean-Baptiste Lemoine
de la Trinité, seigneur and Marie-Elisabeth Durouvray.

vii.Marie-Renée b. March 01, 1695/96, Montreal, Quebec; d. September 17, 1716.  P.R.D.H.
informs us that  Mathurin's brother, Louis (who lived in Batiscan) was at the baptism.

viii.Pierre-Joseph b. September 26, 1700; d. April 16, 1774, Ste Foye, Quebec.

Existing church records and notarized acts give us an idea of where Mathurin lived and his extensive business transactions.  In his early 20s, he made land purchases in Cap de la Madeleine, Batiscan and Ste Marie.  He also formed a business association for the fur trade with his brother, Louis.  A contract dated May 30th 1682 forms a pact between Mathurin, his brother Louis, Rivard of Batiscan and Jean-Baptiste de Peyras, Jacques Gourdo de Quebec, Jean Rougeot dit Bergé of the seigneury of Ste Anne for a voyage to the Outaouais.

A few years after his marriage, Mathurin Guillet moved his family to Montreal where he became an merchant.  He inherited from his father a head for business and he became quite successful.  He became an important member of the community; in the church register of Notre Dame, on the day of his funeral, it states that he was at one time church warden!  Many transactions concerning him appear between 1689 and 1710 with the notaries Adhemar, Maugue and Lepailleur de LaFerté.  The first recorded transaction of Mathurin Guillet in Montreal is dated March 20th 1689.  In the presence of the notary Antoine Adhemar, he acquired a lot in Montreal running along Saint Francois Xavier between Notre Dame and Saint Jacques Streets.  In January 1690 his son, Paul was baptized in Montreal.

Hospital records of Hotel Dieu in Quebec City informs us that Mathurin spent  time at the institution in late 1690.  In November, he was 41 years old when he was hospitalized for 12 days then 30 days and again for 8 days.  It is stated that he is a resident of Montreal, originally of Trois Rivières.  The reason for his stay??

Over several years, there were many business contracts where Mathurin Guillet was mentioned as a Montreal merchant, one as an innkeeper.  In 1704, it was stated that he was a merchant living "au haut de l'ile de Montreal" - at the top of the island of Montreal - Sainte Anne de Bellevue, today.  In 1704, several Native children were baptized in Ste Anne; the church register mentions Mathurin Guillet as witness, resident of the parish.  On August 7th 1713 Marie Charlotte, his wife obtained a land concession in Sainte Anne.  The land was beside the lot where the church of Sainte Anne was/is located.  Mathurin Guillet signed the document.  Some historians feel that the all important fur trading post of Ste Anne was located here.  Mathurin was 63 years old at the time so I suspect he was insuring his wife's well being after his demise.

In the annals of the Congregation of Notre Dame, it is mentioned that the 6th mother superior, Marie-Elisabeth Guillet dit Sister Sainte Barbe was the daughter of Mathurin Guillet, a rich Montreal merchant.  This seems to be confirmed by the lists of guests at Mathurin's daughters Louise Charlotte and Marie Angélique's weddings.  Among the merchant elite of Montreal present at one or both occasions were Pierre Lamoureaux de St Germain, Ignace Gamelin and Ignace Gamelin Jr., Maurice Blondeau, Jean Jacques Catignon and Laurent Renaud.  Also, Angélique Guillet was marrying Jacques Lemoine dit Montigny, a seigneur and the son of Jean Baptiste Lemoine de la Trinité.  Other guests included Nicolas de Longueuil, the son of Charles Lemoine, Baron of Longueuil and René Godfroy de Linctot, esquire, ensign and commander of the fort of Saint Louis.  Louise Charlotte was marrying Jean Baptiste Cuillerier, the son of René, an important merchant.  Present at her wedding were Denis d'Estienne De Clerin, esquire "Aide-Major" of the city and government of Montreal. and Michel Lepailleur, Royal notary.

Mathurin Guillet and Guillaume Daoust, my paternal ancestor both lived in Ste Anne du Bout de l'ile at the beginning of the 18th century.  It was a small parish at the time and they were about the same age, so I figured they must have known each other. This has been confirmed.  The church register of Ste Anne de Bellevue on April 1, 1717 records the death of Jacques Daoust, most likely Guillaume Daoust's brother.  At the funeral were Mathurin Guillet, merchant.  Guillaume and Mathurin were both married in the 1680s.  They were both old men in 1717.   On June 23, 1705, there was a baptism in Ste Anne of a Native boy (Nebicerini).  His Christian name was René Augustin.  At the ceremony was René Augustin Guillet, 13 years old.  His father was with him - Mathurin Guillet, resident of Ste Anne.  Also present were Guillaume Daoust and his wife, Marie Madeleine Lalonde, also residents of Ste Anne!

Mathurin Guillet died on November 7th 1720.  His funeral was held at the parish church of Montreal - Notre Dame.  The church register informs us that he was church warden (I`m unsure of the date he held this important position) and that he was a resident of Ste Anne.
Marie-Charlotte passed away in Montreal on February 22nd 1744 at 80 years of age.  She was buried on the 24th in the cemetery near the church of Notre Dame.
